Building a relationship (continued)
Last week we were looking at the possible interventions that Manoj and Riya could undertake so that they could improve their marital relationship.
It is often important to process the negative experiences – to talk them through, resolve them, understand each other’s stance and seek forgiveness. The deepest bond comes out of such a mutual understanding. You minimize the psychic scarring. You have to work to overcome your negative tendencies and gradually unfreeze the labels that have weakened the basic structure. It is likely that in the course of the rebuilding process, there will be some incidents that will hurt either one of you. It is
important to recognize that such moments are not setbacks but part of the healing process. Manoj and Riya slowly began to understand that discomfort often brings hidden emotions to the surface. Instead of suppressing these feelings, they started expressing them in a calmer and more mindful way. They made a conscious effort to listen without interrupting or becoming defensive. This created a safer emotional space for both of them. Over time, they noticed that even difficult conversations became less threatening. The willingness to stay present during uncomfortable moments became a turning point in their relationship.
They also worked on building small, consistent habits that reinforced trust and connection. Simple gestures like checking in with each other during the day or sharing a meal without distractions started to matter more. Riya appreciated when Manoj acknowledged her feelings, while Manoj felt valued when Riya recognized his efforts. These small but meaningful actions helped them reconnect emotionally. They realized that rebuilding trust is not about big promises but about reliability in everyday moments. Gradually, their interactions became more supportive rather than reactive. This consistency helped reduce misunderstandings and strengthened their bond.
Another important shift came when they began to reflect on their own behaviors instead of focusing only on each other’s flaws. Manoj became more aware of how his silence during conflicts affected Riya, while Riya recognized how her tone sometimes escalated situations. This self-awareness allowed them to take responsibility for their actions. They started approaching disagreements with curiosity rather than blame. By doing so, they were able to understand the deeper reasons behind their reactions. This brought a sense of compassion into their interactions. It became easier to forgive and move forward without holding onto past resentment.
As they continued this journey, Manoj and Riya realized that rebuilding a relationship is not a one-time effort but an ongoing process. There were days when they slipped back into old patterns, but they learned not to be discouraged by it. Instead, they used those moments as reminders to practice what they had learned. Their commitment to growth became stronger than their fear of conflict. Slowly, the emotional distance between them began to fade. What replaced it was a deeper connection built on understanding, patience, and mutual respect.
