Learning disorders, motor skills disorders and communication disorders are all significant syndromes that are associated with disability and distress or increased risk of suffering. There is also growing evidence that these predispose a child to the later development of a clinical psychiatric disorder. Such children may also exhibit associated social, behavioural or emotional symptoms. Low self-esteem, peer relationship problems and situational anxiety in the classroom have been reported over and over again for children with learning disorders. For those children, psychiatric interventions especially behaviour modification and supportive counseling may be most beneficial in establishing successful coping mechanisms and to address a myriad of problems in daily living. These disorders are important not only because of their prevalence but because of their seriousness. They tend to be somewhat stable over time, sharing a complicated course and a discouraging prognosis. We at The Purple Centre suggest that an intervention in the form of screening children for specific learning abilities be carried out in your school.
We suggest that 20% of children from each class beginning from Class IV ( as per the discretion of the class teacher and principal) be tested for these disorders. There would be an administration of 2 tests : Intelligence and Specific Learning Disability tests. Administered on 2 different days for each child, within the school premises. The reports would be generated with 10 days and then a feedback would be given along with recommendations depending on the report.
