GRADUATE PROGRAMME IN PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY

DURATION: 3 years + 1 year optional. ELIGIBILITY: Graduates with aptitude for Psychology, M.D. Psychiatry Residents.

PART – I: FIRST YEAR

THEORY

In this year the focus is on the theories on which different psychotherapy are based. This allows the student to get an overview of various schools of thought so that he may major in the theory of his choice.

  1. Models of mind
  2. Basic of physiology and Neurophysiology
  3. Psychoanalytic theories –  Classical Freudian Psychoanalysis, Contemporaries of Freud (Jung, Adler, Sullivan, Horney), Object Relation Theory

CLINICAL

  1. Signs and Symptoms
  2. Case History taking and Mental Status Examination
  3. Interviewing and rapport building techniques
  4. DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria

Students are required to observe senior students take case histories after which they are expected to interview patients under supervision. Role play is also used as a method of instruction.

PART-II: SECOND AND THIRD YEAR

The second part of the programme is spared over two.

THEORY

  1. MAJOR
    • Freudian + Post Freudians (Hartmann, Anna Freud, Kris Loewenstein, Brenner)
    • Object Relations – Klein, Fairbairn, Bion, Guntrip
    • Kohut, Winnicott and Masud Khan
  2. CHILD TRACK

Child Development, Child Develop mentalists (Erikson, Mahler, Pine), Child Psychopathology, Technique of Child Evaluation and Psychodynamic Play Therapy

CLINICAL

The student sees patients for psychotherapy under supervision, and is required to be in personal therapy with either a senior student or a faculty member.

  1. Technique of Psychotherapy- Basic and Advanced
  2. Continuous case seminars Group process note supervision
  3. Transference, Countertransference, Resistance, Counter-resistance
  4. Therapeutic action of psychotherapy

PROJECT

Every student undertakes a project in the third year, the successful completion of which is a prerequisite for graduation.

PART – III: OPTIONAL FOURTH YEAR — Research, Teaching (as junior faculty), Free-lancing for other psychiatrists, psychotherapy of students, etc.
